An Au Pair is a young woman (between 18 and 30 years of age) who wants to live abroad abroad temporarily for the purpose of improving her knowledge of a foreign language and her professional curriculum. In exchange for teaching her own language, and for helping care for the children in a family and doing household chores, she receives room and board.
It is important to know that an Au Pair is not considered domestic help (being an Au Pair does not imply any sort of labour contract) but should be considered a member of the family and and be perfectly integrated into the family. Having an Au Pair at home is an excellent way for children to learn or improve foreign language skills and gain knowledge about another culture with a native.

The work of an Au Pair and her daily schedule depend on the needs of each family. In any case the conditions are clearly established prior to beginning the program. In general, the following are the tasks the Au Pair may be asked to do:
Work hours are agreed upon between the host family and the Au Pair but should not exceed 30 hours per week. Also, the Au Pair will care for the children at least one night a week. She will have one full day a week free of all duties.
The family will give the Au Pair a certain amount of pocket money (spending money) weekly or monthly (as a general rule, it should be a minimum of 50€/week) and she will receive an additional amount for transportation costs which are related to her work with the family.
